Distribution and habitat preferences

They are found on the pacific coast of Japan and among the Hawaiian Islands. They are also found in Australia, New Zealand and Lord Howe, Norfolk and Kermadec Islands. (Fishbase)

They are typically found in pairs or small groups in deep rocky reef drop-offs.
