Interesting facts

  • These Sea squirts have specialised proteins that bind with the rare earth metal, Vanadium. Vanadium is found in the crust of the Earth, in the Sun, is used to strengthen steel and it is collected in the blood of Tunicates and stored under their tunic (a special layer over their skin). It is thought to prevent animals from eating them but the story of how this metal-collecting blood came about is a mystery.
