Distinguishing features

A small bird with dark grey head, back and wings, contrasting sharply with white breast and underparts. Bill is pale blue with a black tip.

Juveniles have brownish upperparts and a thin off-white eyebrow.  Their chest is also more buff than adults who have very white chest plumage.

Local abundance

  • Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia: Migratory, appearing at Lizard Island in about mid March. Common when present.

Behaviour

Diet is mainly of flying insects and sometimes nectar and pollen. Often seen clumped together on branches.
