Distinguishing features

The head is grey, the chest brown and the wings are brown. The belly and thighs are white and the tail is dark.

In the field, it can be distinguished from the Grey-headed Fish-Eagle because in the Lesser Fish-Eagle, the white plumage ends at the beginning of the tail. In the Grey-headed Fish-Eagle, it extends all the way to the tip of the tail where it ends in a thick, dark band. (Planet of Birds)

Distribution and habitat preferences

found in the Indian Subcontinent, primarily in the foothills of the Himalayas. There have been some stray reports from Gujarat and Central India and in more recent times from the Kaveri river valley in southern India. The distribution in southern India is not yet confirmed. It is also found in small numbers in other countries in south west Asia.

It is found along large forested rivers and in the lowland wetlands and foothills typically below 1,000 m. (Wikipedia)

Diet

It mainly eats fish. It hunts by perch-sallying to the water surface to snatch prey.
