Distribution and habitat preferences

An open-water pelagic and oceanic species occurring above and below the thermocline. This species schools primarily by size, rather than monospecific and has been known to school with other Scombrids as well as porpoises. Schools of Yellowfin Tuna are often associated with floating debris and other objects. They are sensitive to low oxygen levels so are rare below 250m in tropical waters.
