Distinguishing features

Females and juveniles are typically a greenish brown on their upper side and paler underneath, with a darker stripe from the mouth to thebase of the tail.

Males are more reddish-brown or bluish and have distinct red and blue wavy lines (somewhat like Maori Wrasse) on the head and fins.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Typically observed in estuaries and sheltered inshore waters. They are commonly found among rocky reefs but also can be found in seagrass beds.
