Distinguishing features

The Southern Ribbonfish has a narrow eel-like body that thins into a point at the tail. The dorsal fin runs for almost the full length of its body.

It has large eyes, adapted to life at ocean depths with limited light.

Its large extendable mouth is very noticable.
