Red Triton

©John Turnbull: Red Triton (Charonia lampas): live shells are tough to ID, particularly if they are covered in growth. One of the best indicators is the aperture on the underside. The red triton's aperture is white down one side, brown and white striped down the other, with a brown operculum (trapdoor).
