Distinguishing features

White with two thick black bands, the second ending at the tip of the anal fin. Yellow tail and rear part of dorsal fin. Front part of dorsal fin white and elongate. Usually found in large aggregations.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Occur primarily along outer reef slopes, in current channels. Juveniles in aggregations around isolated patch reefs, adults in large schools well above the bottom (FishBase).

Local abundance

  • Lizard Island: Not recorded
  • Snake Pit, about miway between Lizard Island and outer reefs: Large aggregations frequently seen
