Their diet includes cunjevoi, red bait crab and cabbage seaweed. They have very large gut tracks to digest algae, hence the common name "PIG". They are a tough fighter, using their strong swimming tail to hide under rock ledges or in crevices often cutting line off on the edge of rocks. Common target for spearfishers in winter when there is not much around.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Forms large schools in the vicinity of rocky outcrops and in harbors under jetties. Juveniles found in estuaries, mainly in seagrass areas. Secretive during the day, among rocks and hiding in caves and ledges.
