Interesting facts

  • There are two wasps associated with this tree. One is a gall wasp that will lay an egg into the fruit. The egg hatches and releases hormones so that instead of growing the succulent red lilly pilly fruit the tree grows a home (a gall) for the larvae to develop in. The other is a parasitic wasp that will inject its long needle-like oviposter into the gall and lay an egg on the other wasp larvae. This egg will then hatch and eat the gall wasp larvae alive, metamorphose and fly out of it.
