Very popular angling species. Common techniques include cast and retrieve pilchards/garfish/fish flesh strips on ganged or linked hooks, small live baits, lures such as chrome slices, spoons, lead slugs, minnows, jigs and flies. A light wire trace is helpful against Tailor's sharp teeth.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Occur in oceanic and coastal waters. They are most common along surf beaches and rock headlands in clean, high energy waters, although adults can also be found in estuaries and into brackish water. Small fish may be found in shallow coastal waters at least 2m depth (FishBase). Feed on other fish, crustaceans and cephalopods.
