Distribution and habitat preferences

Occurs in standing to slow-flowing water, mostly in vegetated ponds and lakes, backwaters and quiet pools of steams. Frequents brackish water. Observed to inhabit warm, still waters, typically seen shoaling at the edges of streams and lakes.
