Distinguishing features

A small goby that shares a sandy burrow with alpheid shrimp. Normally yellow with blue/white spots on head, upper body and dorsal fins. Allen et al (2003) record pale and dark variations but it is not known whether these occur at Lizard Island.

Distribution and habitat preferences

It can be found in marine environments.

Local abundance

  • Lizard Island: Common in the lagoon near the edge of the reef. In one 2-hour dive to 4 m depth, at least 30 individuals was seen. Most were the pale barred colour form; only about 5 were yellow. One burrow was shared by two individuals of different colour forms.
