Distinguishing features

A bright red/orange patch curves around the upper base of pectoral fin in terminal phase individuals; the red patch is much smaller in the less brightly-coloured initial phase individuals.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Usually found in shallow clear water of reef flats and lagoon and seaward reefs, in areas of mixed sand, rubble and coral (FishBase).
