Distinguishing features

It has brown upperparts and and a rufous-brown area on each folded wing. Plumage around the eyes and at the base of the bill is pale, as is the chin and throat.  Its underparts are a grey/brown colour and the middle of the belly is off-white.

It has reddish-brown irises, an off-white to pinkish-white gape, and pinkish-brown legs and feet.

The sexes are similar, with females being a little smaller than males.

Juveniles are similar to the adults, but are distinguished at close range by having brown  irises and a yellow gape.
