Distinguishing features

Adults are brown, with grey eyes and brown legs.  Their black antennae are short with rounded tips.  They have two pairs of transparent wings with brown veins.

Synonyms

Interesting facts

  • In the larva stage, they prepare conical sand traps for ants with diameters up to 40mm.  Ants fall in and find it difficult to climb out, especially when gripped in the large jaws of the antlion, hiding at the bottom of the trap.
