Distinguishing features

The frog is generally quite rotund, with yellowish skin on the top side that normally has some brown patches and with paler skin underneath.

Male frogs grow to 3-4 cm long. Females are larger, growing up to 5 cm long.

Distribution and habitat preferences

Found in sparsely vegetated areas on clay or loam soils.

Behaviour

Normally remain buried until heavy Summer rains, whereon they emerge to breed in claypans. Males typically call while in water. Their call is a repetitive tapping sound like a shoemaker tapping nails into a shoe.
