Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus)

Trying to look his best in a courtship display, this male Northern Flicker was competing for the affections of an onlooking female. A nearby male also did his best to impress her. Not sure which one eventually caught her fancy, maybe both :) One year at this site, I witnessed 3 adults attempting to feed nestlings. One of them was eventually thrown out (literally) of the nest cavity, landing unceremoniously on its back in a flutter of feathers!
