Photo of Animalia: Allen's Hummingbird (species: Selasphorus sasin) (Gaia Guide)

Male

© Len Blumin

The male Allen's Hummingbird spends most of the day flying from perch to perch while defending his territory. He feeds mostly later in the day. The black gorget catches fire only when the light is just right. The green back is a good discriminator from the closely related Rufous Hummingbird, which usually (not always!) has a rufous back.
