Native, warm-season, perennial, grass with long rhizomes; tends to form dense, low mats, with erect stems 15-40 cm tall. Leaves are rigid, smooth, relatively short, sharp pointed and arranged in two distinctly opposite rows. There is a narrow-leaf and a broad-leaf variety with many intermediates. Found on coastal margins, including sand dunes and tidal wetlands. Prefers sandy soils and doesn't tolerate constant inundation.
