Native, yearlong-green, perennial, erect, loosely to densely tufted grass, often with only 2-5 stems to 1.5 m tall. Leaves are mostly basal. Usually found in low abundance in woodlands and open forests; occasionally in native grasslands. Often in disturbed areas with dappled shade and which are little grazed. Palatable to stock when young, it is of little agricultural value because of its low production and coarse stemmy habit when mature. Decreases under set stocking, even at low stocking rates.
