Forest Hedgehog Grass (Echinopogon ovatus)

© Harry Rose

Native, cool-season, perennial, grass with slender solitary stems to 1.2 m tall that arise from a slender rhizome. Leaves are spaced along the stems. Found in moist and dappled shade conditions in woodlands and forests (especially wet sclerophyll) and by creeks. Palatable to stock, but of minor grazing value as it contributes little biomass and is sensitive to grazing and disturbance. May cause ‘stagger’ when young due to a fungus associated with the plant.
