Male Chowchilla (Orthonyx spaldingii)

They scratch around in the forest floor for their food and are reluctant to emerge into the open as the Noisy Pitta does. Every other time I have visited Gumburu they have made themselves really obvious by their raucous calls early in the morning but this time I hardly heard them. Paluma was drier this time than I have ever seen it before, so perhaps their numbers are down because of food shortage.
