Flowerheads are spike-like contracted panicles 8-30 cm long. Spikelets are 1-flowered with the glumes equal to or longer than lemma length. Lemma has a 3-branched awn and is 8-12 mm long, pale or purple and longer than both purplish glumes or shorter/subequal to the upper glume. When young, the 3 awns are appressed to each other and often appear to have 1 awn.
