Quaking Grass (Briza maxima)

© Matt Lavin

Although not yet known from Montana, this grass could appear in the northwest part of the state where it would then be confused with the introduced annual bunchgrass Bromus briziformis. The overlapping margins of the leaf sheaths (i.e., they are not fused) and the lack of an awn from the back of the lemma tip of this species are uncharacteristic of Bromus.
