Stylophora mordax is listed as a synonym of Stylophora pistillata by WORMS (accessed 10 Sep 2016). Veron (2000) notes that the fatter "mordax" form is often found on shallow reef flats. However, coral workers at James Cook University in 2016 are recording Stylophora mordax as a separate species according to Grace Frank.
